In today's blog I will be telling you about the most confused rule of football game ever, i.e., OFFSIDE RULE. There are a lot of confusion regarding this rule. Offside is not a very hard rule, trust me once I make you understand the rule you will be like, " Oh Shoot! I wasn't able to get this!!" LoL it is okay. So without wasting time let us learn.

So basically offside has 2 cases. We will first discuss the first case which is also the most important case. In this picture we can already see S2, i.e, striker 2 is on offside position. How I can say this?

Whenever a striker is ahead of the ball or ball line, as drawn in the picture. and also ahead of the second last defender which is D2, since goalkeeper is regarded as the last defender, then in such case a striker is said to be in an offside position. BUT, the most important part here, offside decision is taken by the linesman according to the position at the time when the ball is passed not when the ball is recieved. From this picture we can say, when S1 passes the ball S2, then offside decision will be taken according to the position of S2 when S1 passes the ball, not when S2 recieves the ball. He can recieve the ball anywhere, doesn't matter. But S2 is bound to be behind the second last defender's line while the pass is made, otherwise, you know- Offside.

Now in addition to this first case of offside, there is one more things. An offside can only be given only when the striker (who is in offside position) is actively participating with the ball or his player or if he is making any difference in that current zone. Otherwise standing in an offside position is not a foul. You can stand their for the full match, no foul will be given.

Coming onto the 2nd case of offside. Football is a situation game. There are many times a situation when 2 strikers charge up against goal keeper, as you can see in the diagram. Here, S1 and S2 are both charging against the goal keeper. Therfore, S2 will be fouled as offside if he is running or standing ahead of the ball line and gets the pass. Either S2 has to run in line with the ball or has to be behind the ball line, otherwise, offside. Here also, offside decision is given according to the position of strikers when pass is made not when the pass is recieved. So basically, S2 can be on the same line as the ball or behind it. S1 can pass ahead of him (S2) and then S2 can recieve the ball and no offside foul will be given.

There are some basic additional rules with offside. A striker cannot be fouled offside in his own half, i.e, defending half. He can only be fouled in attacking half. Next, you can recieve the ball directly from 3 places, which are. from goal kick, throw ins and corner kick. You can directly get the ball from these 3 spots without worrying about any line.

In all these pictures, decisions are made according to the position of the striker when the pass was made. REMEMBER THIS ALWAYS.

Now this picture is an example when there is no offside:

While the pass is made, the striker is behind the second last defender. Doesn't matter where he recieves the ball.

But always remeber, the most important decision making factor is, the positions of the striker when the pass is made, not when the pass is recieved (I know I am repeating this many times because people confuse in this thing the most).
